I find it a bit hard to review this.
Firstly, I grew up watching the original cartoon version of this. When they announced that they will do a live-version as well, with Tim Burton at helm, well.. I knew it will be different.
Indeed, it had to be different.
In fact, I think a lot of people should expect it to be different. It's Tim Burton's direction, whose film is always lean towards gothic. At least, there are more colours to avoid it being "dark"
That being said, it's just alright. Credit to story writers that they able to give a different direction but misses the original magic (should everyone expecting that). Yea, it's underwhelming.
Meanwhile, visually it looks impressive.
